Brogden appointed first patron of Lifeline NSW
Lifeline NSW is pleased to announce that Manchester Unity Chief Executive Officer and former New South Wales Opposition Leader John Brogden has accepted an invitation to become the first ever Patron of Lifeline NSW.
Lifeline NSW was formed in April 2007, to bring together the 15 Lifeline Centres in NSW as a single cohesive network to strengthen each centre’s capacity and sustainability.
Lifeline NSW Chairman David Woolley said he was delighted Mr Brogden had accepted the position.
Mr Woolley said Mr Brogden’s position as CEO of Manchester Unity and his previous role in politics give him outstanding credentials as the new Patron of the organisation.
Mr Brogden said he was honoured to accept the position and will work tirelessly to raise the profile of Lifeline and the important role it plays in our society.
Mr Brogden said he also would work to secure commercial partnerships for Lifeline NSW.
“Lifeline is often the last resort for people suffering distress and despair with nowhere else to turn for the help they need,” Mr Brogden said.
“Lifeline provides such an important service with limited Government funding,” he said.
Lifeline Australia CEO, Dawn O'Neil, has welcomed Mr Brogden as Patron of the new Lifeline NSW network.
“We are pleased to have Mr Brogden join the Lifeline network as Patron. His support will be of great benefit to the collaborative efforts of our Lifeline Centres in NSW, and in raising awareness about
the services that are available to Australians in need,” said Ms O'Neil.
Mr Woolley said more than 200,000 calls a year are taken in NSW on the nationwide Lifeline 24 hour telephone counselling service 13 11 14.
He said people call about issues ranging from loneliness, depression, family difficulties, abuse, grief and loss, to thoughts of suicide. The
service provides caring and confidential support for anyone in need, anytime, anywhere.
Each centre also provides related support to its local community, including face to face counselling, emergency welfare and suicide prevention services.

"The personal reward and satisfaction that I've got from giving my time to helping others through Lifeline has been huge. I'd encourage anyone who
has a couple of hours a week to think seriously about it."
